Anyone have a suggestion for a good, inexpensive web and domain host? I suspect I want three or four domains, a half-dozen to a dozen e-mail addresses per domain, and relatively low bandwidth. Third-level domain control (foo.bar.org) would be great, but not absolutely necessary. CGI support (so that I can set up my own installation of Moveable Type) would be nice, too, though I'm actually pretty content with LJ for my online-journaling needs.

I think pair.com offers most of those, although it doesn't offer all of them at its cheapest level of service. I've used them for some simple web sites I designed and they've seemed pretty reasonable to deal with. They also have an associated registrar, pairnic.com.

I'm using pair.com and I've been very happy with them.

One quick note: a hosting service that allows you to set up arbitrary CGI on their machine (as opposed to one offering a selection of specific supported scripts, perhaps including Moveable Type, or one offering general CGI support on a machine dedicated entirely to you) is probably not to be trusted. They're likely to have other lousy security policies.

Eh -- not necessarily -- they may simply have decent security on their machines and run all scripts in, say, a chroot jail, suided to you.

I've been fairly happy (so far) with hostforweb.com, which offers a lot (including CGI) for a reasonable price.

I'm happy (98% of the time) with Dreamhost and they're having a good sale right now, too.

I use joker.com for actual domain name registration, but host all my many domains at Dreamhost.

Verve Hosting (http://www.vervehosting.com/) offers all of that remarkably cheaply. The $5/month plan will get you domain hosting, 10 email accounts, 5 third-level domains, and CGI; at $10/month, you get 5 add-on domains. Inner Bitch (http://www.innerbitch.net) is hosted there, as is the New Pittsburgh Collaborative (http://www.newpittsburghcollaborative.org/) site (not much to look at yet, but we run several mailing lists from that site using mailman).

I also like Llamacom (http://www.llamacom.com), which is cheap and reliable, but doesn't offer nearly as many features for the money as Verve does.

Verve looks pretty good. I may move my domains there.

Hasweb.com is mine. I looked this up for a friend the other night, and their lowest rate is $35 a year. They have tons of bells and whistles and are very helpful when you have questions. Also very reliable.

I use GoDaddy.com for domain names. Usually under $10 a year.

godaddy.com . The name is stupid, but everything else seems pretty good.

I'm pretty happy with Candledark (http://www.candledark.net). There's a variety of pricing plans, plus a deal on getting six domains (I think it is six) as opposed to just one or two. Good CGI support, too. A bunch of other things are available, but I haven't tried out everything... yet. Yes, they allow multiple e-mails, too.
