The last time [livejournal.com profile] sarah_ovenall mentioned this, I went hunting but couldn't find it. But now, YouTube has a copy of "Sing Before Breakfast" from Broadway Melody of 1936, starring Buddy Ebsen and his sister and long-time dance partner Vilma as well as Eleanor Powell. It's exactly as cheerful as the title would indicate.

I'm so glad you found this! I've been trying to figure out how to extract clips from DVDs just so I could post this very dance number.

(if you know how to do that, can you let me know? I have XP now because I have a dual core Mac.)

actually no :) I have a Mac & I don't think that card would fit. I'm looking for software that would let me rip a small section of a DVD. Does that even exist? I'm assuming it does.

As you know because I've stolen some of your links before, I love your posting this stuff. However, might you consider doing it as a link to the site on YouTube rather than the large interior window?

I did have a link as well. Does having the still Flash image cause problems for you?

No, forget I made the comment. Sorry...

No problem. The link is just a little bit of colored text, overshadowed by its stupid but much bigger brother, the embedded picture....

Ah, Buddy. So good. The Mickey Mouse shirt caught my eye, because my favorite performance of his is from the Mickey Mouse Club, though if I ever get hold of Captain January, I expect to enjoy his rendition of "At The Codfish Ball" (with Shirley, I think). Of course, it isn't in the Lux radio version, but that's to be expected.

I've been wondering about that Mickey Mouse sweater ever since I first saw this movie a few months ago. 1935 must have been pretty early in the days of Mickey Mouse sweaters and I wonder what they're trying to tell us about Ebsen's character by having him wear it. My hunch is that it's meant to visually reinforce that he's a happy-go-lucky, if somewhat down at the heels, vaudevillian.

Mickey Mouse was really big at that time. Searching on "mickey mouse merchandise" and 1935 got me a quote: "Meanwhile, Disney’s Mickey Mouse toys dominated the marketplace. By 1935, Mickey Mouse merchandise earned more money than Mickey Mouse cartoons, a first in motion picture history."

I can see happy-go-lucky, but I don't think it necessarily implies down at the heels. Mickey Mouse was huge business.
