I don't buy new music very often, so I'm surprised to say that on a whim I bought Hot Fuss by The Killers. Two of the songs on the album had been getting a moderate amount of play on the radio station I'm in love with (WXPK, "The Peak", 107.1 FM in White Plains), enough so that I recognize them and like them. One of them, "Mr. Brightside", is both quite good and very peculiar; it sounds exactly like The Pixies performing an Ultravox song, which is as weird a combination as you're likely to find among bands I like. (Well, okay, there's still Mojo Nixon's performance of "Girlfriend in a Coma.")

The rest of the album, unsurprisingly, is not as good as the two "hits" (the other is "Smile Like You Mean It"), but I don't regret having bought it.

I might be forgetting something, but it seems to me the last time I heard something of a popular nature and went out and bought it was when I scored the single of "I'm An Adult Now" by The Pursuit of Happiness. 45 rpm, kiddies, just like "Happy Days"!

(I heard a parody of that once, called "Cause I'm an Elf now." If memory serves, this was around Christmastime.)
