I don't buy new music very often, so I'm surprised to say that on a whim I bought Hot Fuss by The Killers. Two of the songs on the album had been getting a moderate amount of play on the radio station I'm in love with (WXPK, "The Peak", 107.1 FM in White Plains), enough so that I recognize them and like them. One of them, "Mr. Brightside", is both quite good and very peculiar; it sounds exactly like The Pixies performing an Ultravox song, which is as weird a combination as you're likely to find among bands I like. (Well, okay, there's still Mojo Nixon's performance of "Girlfriend in a Coma.")

The rest of the album, unsurprisingly, is not as good as the two "hits" (the other is "Smile Like You Mean It"), but I don't regret having bought it.

We had that disc for a while at work, and it quickly became a favorite. One day I'll pick up that album, I swear. ;)

I might be forgetting something, but it seems to me the last time I heard something of a popular nature and went out and bought it was when I scored the single of "I'm An Adult Now" by The Pursuit of Happiness. 45 rpm, kiddies, just like "Happy Days"!

(I heard a parody of that once, called "Cause I'm an Elf now." If memory serves, this was around Christmastime.)

The Killers! That's one of the few new bands I've heard that I really liked.

And thanks for mentioning Mojo Nixon, I was trying to remember his name yesterday.

I think I've heard one of their songs on the radio -- they do the "...had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I [something about February]..."? I'm bad with lyrics. I didn't like the song as a whole, but I throught that they did an exceptional job of a great rolling tempo with some real momentum in the chorus.

I'll have to re-listen to "Smile Like You Mean It". The other other Killers hit is "Somebody Told Me", which is the one epi_lj is referring to. ("Somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year")

On multiple listens, while I enjoy "Mr. Brightside" muchly, it's got a fairly pathetic structure: Verse 1...and then Verse 1 again, and then the song is over.

Picking nits, it's verse 1, chorus, verse 1, chorus.

How do you distinguish between verse and chorus?
