One of my favorite phrases ever was coined by Gary Trudeau: "To the '70s! A kidney-stone of a decade!"

Every December 31, I find myself reminded of that. Really, I've had worse years than 2004--2003, 2001, 2000, and 2002 all come to mind. But I hate ending each year thinking "This has been another kidney-stone." So let's have a good 2005 and keep the calcified bits of history out of the nephrons of our consciousness. Peace out.

Then let us keep at hand our supply of magnesium. In every life, we have our own magnesium. It might be metaphorical, but in my case, it's magnesium. I had three kidney stones, about a year or so apart, in the early 80s, and thought I was going to have to choose between milk products and freedom from incapacitating pain (I was leaning toward the milk products; nuts and green leafy vegetables were also among the things I would have to cut out, in theory). My sis found a reference in Adele Davis to magnesium, so I started taking it, and haven't had another stone since then. Magnesium supposedly metabolizes the calcium (I forget what happens to the oxalic acid) a bit at a time instead of squirreling it away in the kidneys. Seems to be working.

Heh! Well, it's been jolly fun taking your funny metaphor and treating it with deadly and tedious seriousness. I see a typo I could have discoursed on, too. Anyway, the best thing to do with those calcified bits of history is to piss them away a little at a time, so learn from my experience, kiddies, and start a-whizzin'. You'll also want to drink lots of metaphoric water.

Poor Gary Trudeau: I had quite a lot of fun in the 70s, mostly because it was the post-pill, pre-AIDS era.

I didn't think I could have a worse year than 2003, and then 2004 came along. Maybe it will turn around for me this year. I hope.

My big hope for 2004, lovingly nurtured over four years is that my country would come to its senses but what a foolish notion *that* was, eh?
