If you happen to be in the market for a new car, and you happen to have narrowed down your choices to a [something] or a Ford, and you're deeply undecided, I recommend that you buy a Ford.

Why? Because the lunatics at the American Family Association--Christianist totalitarians, the type of people who oppose sex because it might lead to dancing--have been targeting Ford for over a year because Ford insists on treating gay people like human beings.

Just so you know.

Signed,

a proud Ford owner

Wish their car quality matched their social conscience: I had a Mustang several years ago that had serious paint-flaking problems. I was told that it must have been a problem at the dock that was not covered by their warranty. Then a couple of years later Ford admitted that they had a continuing problem with metallic paints the year after lead paint was outlawed. When I brought the car back to the dealership, they said that my original complaint was "too old to qualify." That turned me off Ford from then on. I believe in rewarding good social policies but not bad customer treatment so this is a wash, I guess...

We've owned two Fords, in sequence, for a total of 15 years, and plan on our next car being a Ford as well. Our current car is a 1999 Taurus and all it's needed (aside from normal maintenance) is a new speed sensor.

How wonderful that Ford, of all companies, should now be notable for its stand against bigotry. And the owl was once the baker's daughter.

Actually, I don't even know that Ford is noteworthy for its stand against bigotry. What I do know is that it has been targeted by one of the worst actors in American politics. For all I know, a hundred other manufacturers are as anti-bigoted and the AFA is targeting Ford because Don Wildmon is heavily invested in GM.

Good point. It's still wonderfully ironic, given that Ford's founder was a major promoter of anti-Semitism.

supergee made the same point in conversation this morning--his family boycotted Ford because of Henry Ford's perversions.

When I was a lad in Merrick, NY, I noticed that my neighbor Jeffrey's mom always, always, always wore long-sleeved shirts. It never occurred to me, in those more innocent days, that this might be a sign of spousal abuse.

Well, one day, a third friend's mom invited the both of us to the community swimming pool over in Bellmore, offering to drive. Jeff's mom said, "No, I'll drive," with a great deal of finality. Eddie's mom asked why, and she said, "Because you drive a Ford. My family do not ride in Fords."

In those more innocent days, I asked why. Mrs. P. said, "Some years ago, Henry Ford received a medal from the same man who gave me this," and she rolled up her sleeve and showed me a tattoo: just a bunch of numbers, but I knew what they meant.

And that is why I never have owned and never will own a Ford.

I can certainly understand that reaction. As I said to Patrick above, though, Ford is now the chosen enemy of the heirs to the Nazi tradition. The world is a moving target.
