Shiny!

No, not a Serenity post. (Incidentally, if you have any spoilers for the film, keep them to yourself.)

Here's a "coming attractions" trailer for a major new release by a director who hasn't done much lately. (2 MB .wmv file; well worth the download time.) Looks like it could be really good--an interesting combination of familiar source material and an unusual tone. More discussion in comments. (Via Mark Evanier and Patrick O'Leary, though [livejournal.com profile] agrumer also posted it.)

Evanier's intro was this:

I used to have a friend whose job was to lie for a big movie studio. Actually, there are a lot of people in that field but his fibbing was confined to producing movie trailers. When the studio found itself stuck with a movie it thought wouldn't draw an audience, my friend took over. He would design a marketing campaign that would make it look like a very different movie. He sometimes referred to himself as the Executive In Charge of Misleading Advertising.

It's long been a truism of mine that just that any halfway-talented person can take any film, no matter how bad, and make a good trailer for it. This demonstrates that a really talented person can take any movie and make any kind of trailer for it.

They also have trailers of Titanic and West Side Story as horror flicks. The latter is done 28 Days Later style and cheats by CGIing glowing eyes onto people, but the Titanic one is a hoot.
