The new face of the Republican party.

17% of the American voting public declared that they voted for George W. Bush for reasons of "moral value". Considering that the Republican party opposes government assistance to the poor and the needy, and opposes teaching sexual responsibility, one can only gather that this "moral values" means "Death to faggots". The Republican view of "national security" seems to mean "death to towelheads", which I also have a hard time mapping to either "moral values" or even "security".

My dear [livejournal.com profile] nellorat has pointed out that it's not the best thing in the world to demonize the opposition. But let me put it this way: If you're a Republican and you're offended by this characterization of your party, what are you doing to counteract it? This is not some small fringe; this is a third of Bush's voters.

Or you could just take their own words for it (LA Times free registration required):

Since 1968, the left has taken millions captive, and we must help those Democrats who truly want to be free to actually break free of this evil ideology. . . . Conservatives must not compromise with the left. Good people holding false ideas are won over only if we defeat what is false with the truth.

The left bewitches with its potions and elixirs, served daily in its strongholds of academe, Hollywood and old media. It vomits upon the morals, values and traditions we hold sacred: God, family and country. As we learned Tuesday, it is clear the left holds the majority of Americans, the majority of us, in contempt.

Some majority. The margin they won by roughly equals the population of the state of Oregon. That's *not* a lot of people. I think half of the population holds the other half in contempt, but I don't think it's the half they think. Are my people insisting courthouses post copies of ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES? Are we insisting only some families are worthy of legal protection? It's always been amazing to me that they really do think they're being oppressed, and that they hold some kind of moral high ground.

The relatively good news (from npr this morning) is that only a third of Americans oppose civil unions for gays.

This isn't great, but hammering on how the other side is full of knuckle-dragging yahoos oversimplifies the situation.

Yeah, that really is sickening... and I agree with you.
