Sy Hersh: My current hero
May. 16th, 2004 01:09 amThe forthcoming New Yorker contains an article entitled The Gray Zone. Here's how it begins:
The roots of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal lie not in the criminal inclinations of a few Army reservists but in a decision, approved last year by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to expand a highly secret operation, which had been focussed on the hunt for Al Qaeda, to the interrogation of prisoners in Iraq. Rumsfeld’s decision embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of élite combat units, and hurt America’s prospects in the war on terror.

Date: 2004-05-16 12:58 pm (UTC)Seymour Hersh has unbelievable sources, and his reporting on Abu Ghraib has thus far been unimpeachable (sorry). I understand why his sources have to remain anonymous, but that does trouble me. At best, it gives the administration ammunition in dismissing the allegations, and undermines the reading public's confidence in the facts.
Having said that, I think Hersh has done more to expose the Bush administration's mendacity and undemocratic tendencies than nine-tenths of the working press.
