I cannot find a music player for Android that

a) supports m3u playlists

AND

b) automatically bookmarks long audio files and resumes playing at the same point even if you go off and play another music file in the middle.

I would have thought both of these were common features, but no. "B" is a must-have for me--as noted, I listen to a lot of downloaded radio shows, and being able to stop, go to another file, and then come back in the same place is absolutely necessary. The only music player for Android that I've been able to find that does this is Astro Play. Anyone know any others?

I know that with iTunes and the iPod, these are features implemented for podcasts and audiobooks, and I think the only technical distinctions between those and ordinary music MP3 files is handled at the metadata level. Is there maybe an Android app that does the same thing? Letting you tell it "Treat this file like an audiobook", either with a desktop client or on the handheld app?

Maybe another option would be having one app for podcasts, and another for listening to music.

The two-player option was widely discussed--Mort Player has both a "music" version and an "audiobook" version. It strikes me as inelegant.

I note that the built-in player in the Palm Pre also would not bookmark "music" files, and to get around that I had to tag all the long files as "podcast". I can't understand why players can't recognize that there are music files that are more than a 2:30. What do they think this is, 1962?

I dunno. If "listen to song" and "listen to podcast" are two distinct tasks, maybe it makes sense to have two distinct apps.

I know of people who use different text editors for different kinds of writing.

But what the two-player approach forces me to is separate apps for short and long pieces of music, which is just dumb.
