to express how I feel about this development:

To avoid Constance McMillen bringing a female date to her prom, the teen was sent to a "fake prom" while the rest of her class partied at a secret location at an event organized by parents.

McMillen tells The Advocate that a parent-organized prom happened behind her back -- she and her date were sent to a Friday night event at a country club in Fulton, Miss., that attracted only five other students.

The thing that disgusts me the most is that no one who attended the real, hidden prom had the human decency to break silence about it.

What I read is that she did know that the other prom existed but decided she'd rather not crash it, and indeed had a better time where she was, because the other attendees were other outcasts who were delighted to have a social occasion where nobody was picking on them.

But that's no excuse for the perpetrators. The combination here of homophobia, echoes of racism, the high-school caste system, and the Mean Girls phenomenon is possibly the most socially toxic brew I've ever encountered.

I expect that after Ms McMillen graduates, she will move far, far away and never return.

where did you read that? I hope it's true. As nasty and spiteful as this "fake prom" stunt was, I hope at least they hadn't actually fooled her.

I'm sorry, I don't remember which of the news/commentary sites I read that said that. It involved a report of an interview with McMillen. It did also mention what ferret_herder said, about the kids with learning disabilities, so I should have included "ableism", if that's the appropriate term, among the toxic mix of prejudices above.

I read the same thing, possibly on her Facebook fan page.

Note that two of the other kids were ones with learning disabilities; at least they had fun, I guess.

Maybe the best way to look at it is that the idiots had to spend money to amuse the people they despise.

MisNomer ?

As a Crde carring Welshman I'd discribe this way of dealing with the 'pronblem' as very English- Sir Hunphrey Appleby would approve.
No fuss just shuffle the 'Offenders into a bywater & \ignore them
