Couple of quick links
Apr. 6th, 2010 09:22 pmI haven't posted much lately because I've been very busy (and/or mildly sick) since getting home from the ICFA--NYRSF work weekend, lots of gaming over Easter, long hours at work to catch up after all the time I had to take for ptherapy and the Conference. But I wanted to pass these along:
1. A quickie from the comments at The Reality Based Community:
2. Years and years and years ago, on rasff, I was in an argument with a smugly self-satisfied affluent Young Republican who thought he was being bold and daring by saying of racism that
And complimented himself on his "objectivity".
Well, I responded to him at the time that it was all very nice for him to glibly blame American blacks for their own fate by confusing cause and effect, but I couldn't bring to it the eloquence or sweeping majesty of this statement by Jesse Taylor:
So, thank you, Jesse, for finally giving me that answer.

Some say the world will end in fire. Some say ice…
From what I'’ve seen from global warming deniers,
I'd say ire.
2. Years and years and years ago, on rasff, I was in an argument with a smugly self-satisfied affluent Young Republican who thought he was being bold and daring by saying of racism that
among the problems which face African Americans _today_, it's not the most important problem, or even one of the five most important problems....
If you had a magic wand, which you could only use once, and it would either eliminate racism from the heart of every white
American or reduce black television viewing by black children by 25% and replace it with reading, the latter would do far more, in the long run, to better the status of blacks in America.
And complimented himself on his "objectivity".

The easiest way to excuse racism is to rewrite and reinterpret history so that its effects are divorced from the cause. If racism causes suffering, you get around it by blaming the suffering on the victims. Of course, this is in and of itself racist -- the reason a persecuted minority was persecuted is because they're so weak and dumb and persecutable. But it allows the racist to distance themselves from their own beliefs by saying that they aren't being racist, they're just reflecting a reality without racism. A reality which happens to be racist as fuck.
So, thank you, Jesse, for finally giving me that answer.
