Coretta Ratt King, 2007-2010

Coretta was doing well under oxygen--alert, active, hoarding food--and suddenly went into cardiac arrest about ten minutes ago.

I will have a longer writeup tonight, but I will mention that her descent into illness was much more sudden than I had thought--the exotics vet examined her Friday evening and she was fine then.

This is not a good year for your ratties.

=(

We have averaged one rat death per week for the past five weeks. That's plusungood.

A large part of it had to be expected, as for various reasons we ended up with eight rats very close to the same age. Now we have only five rats, two of whom are senior.

The only cure for ratsie grief is ratsie love: I spent today lining up adoptees, including four BABIES (the max that is sensible for one age; but--babies!) and maybe one older one. We usually have around ten. The rats are so delightful, but they only live 2-3 years. Many people give up on rats; anyone who does not usually has an ongoing group, which is of comfort though individuals die.
