Late to the party

I suspect that everyone in the world has seen this already, but:

NME, the British music magazine, and AOL, the internet service obstructor, are hosting a RealVideo copy of the video to Johnny Cash's rendition of Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails's "Hurt". Look for the link that says "click here to watch it"

(Technical notes: you have to have RealPlayer installed; I recommend running it at 2x size on full-screen. Since it's a TV video, it will look very grainy if you try to run it full screen on any reasonable modern monitor; a TV screen is only about 300x200 pixels.)

Oh, my, god that's good. Now I see why so many people were disappointed or outraged that it didn't sweep the MTV awards. This is one of the most authentically sorrowful pieces of music I've ever heard, and the video is perfectly suited to it--on the occasions that it is visually bombastic, it is so in a way that is completely of a piece with both Cash and NIN.

I HATE RealPlayer. Almost as much as I hate Microsoft.

Having gotten that out of my system - you're right, it's a wonderful video.

Screen Resolution

It's a bit better than that. The vertical resolution is 525 scan lines (exactly) minus about 10 percent. For broadcast-quality TV, the horizontal resolution is about 440 pixels in black and white and less for color. VHS is about 80% of that (horizontally). So a more accurate statement would be 440 x 480.

Thanks for the correction--I'm not sure where I got the idea that it was 300x200, which is pretty close to CGA, isn't it? Ah, googling tells me that CGA was 320x200, which must be what I was thinking of.

So television is clearer than CGA and worse than VGA (640x480) though with more color....
