Brightwaters and Scunthorpe

In a comment to an f-locked post, someone left this memory:

I remember an online discussion board that had anti-rude filters placed on it after a change in ownership. This immediately resulted in somebody finding themselves unwittingly discussing the "buttbuttination" of Archduke Ferdinand.

"Arse" got through just fine, however.

I think this surpasses even The Richmond Times's reference to "The Spanish War of Northern Aggression" as my favorite "inappropriate global search-and-replace" story of all time.

[Edited to correct spelling of "Scunthorpe". Thanks, Del_c.]

Scunthorpe's only got one "t". That's why it's an amusing search and replace error, because it wouldn't happen if Anglo-Saxon place names weren't concatenated.

Don't forget One News Now's plaudits for the sprinting ability of Tyson Homosexual earlier this year.

Tyson Homosexual! Yes, I remember that - it made me laugh even more than historical buttbuttinations.

I had some fun earlier this year reading various sites that use those filters when archiving news stories. (You would think bluegrassworld.com would know better.) It's apparently the same filtering software that produces such lovely lines as "Spokane's lawyers, like those in Portland, argued that the bishop holds 'bare legal breastle' to the property and buttets that lawfully belong to the diocese's 81 parishes and affiliated enbreasties, such as schools and cemeteries." There's also a comparison of two different versions of an old press release about John Kerry here (http://hummingwolf.livejournal.com/469105.html).

This genuinely made me laugh out loud. A real startle-the-rats hoot!
