I suppose if the NY Senate couldn't get its act in gear for Loving Day, at least it managed to give an extra boost to Pride Weekend. What a blessed relief.

(ETA: Amanda Marcotte linked to this very silly mashup of Boston and "Y.M.C.A.", saying "Marc and I both thought that the lyrics and the vocals to 'YMCA'---which is a song about gay men escaping to New York City to find a little freedom---were actually both moving and cheeky, but it's hard to really see that because they're backed by the most unforgiveably cheesy disco imaginable." Enjoy!)

Broadening out: Back on Memorial Day, I heard a Soundcheck interview with Steve Martin about his new bluegrass album with the Steep Canyon Rangers, Rare Bird Alert. Introducing the song "Go Away, Stop, Turn Around, Come Back", he explained (and I paraphrase) that one of the great things about writing songs about love is that love is so vast and varied that whatever you write, someone will find it completely familiar. Just the other day, he said, he heard a song that he could have sworn was written just for him, especially the part that went "Steve, you white-haired bastard, I hate you and I'm leaving."

That said, I don't know why Jeffrey Lewis's "Broken, Broken, Broken Heart" hits me as hard as it does. I guess the high school/college me of complete romantic failure is never far from the surface.

Broken broken broken heart
When will you just go away
You just hurt hurt hurt inside of me
Every minute of the night and day

And all I do is try try not to think
Not to think of anything at all
If I can keep myself from thinking for the rest of my life
Maybe I'll survive this fall

(Discovered this through Pandora, which served it up on the Bishop Allen channel. Like Bishop Allen's "Little Black Ache", it's a very catchy, bouncy song about deep existential darkness, so, good call, Pandora!)
