Again, because I am badly behind on LJ, I have just seen this remarkable thing, to which [livejournal.com profile] nancylebov posted back on June 24th. It is uncanny, science-fictional, artistic, and just plain cool.

Wind-powered walking machine )

(This is actually the second recent nancylebov post in which I have found information necessary to propagate; the other was a pointer to, and brief discussion of, a psych experiment which indicates that is a significant body of people who, at a deep level not recognized by their conscious self, react to "making other people angry" as a reward.)

[livejournal.com profile] esmeraldus_neo pointed me to this generator of cat macros with captions from various feeds.

Root page here; my page (always changing) here.

And one particularly nice one saved )

When you see this post, post a few quotations from your own favorite writers. Go ahead and do it from memory,
mistakes and all.

[I'm cheating--few of these are my favorite writers, but these are short passages which have stayed with me. I know that a lot of these are very sloppy paraphrases; my memory has never been one for precise word order.]

"The great grey shroud of the sky rolled on unchanged as it had five thousand years before."--Herman Melville

"The ways of the past endured for so many chileads that the patterns set then remained though the reasons for them had ended ages ago." --Gene Wolfe

"What New Dorp needed was a better government. What New Viron needed was a better people." --Gene Wolfe, again

"The most merciful gift of the human mind is its inability to correlate all its contents." --H. P. Lovecraft

"I trusted that rug." --Philip K. Dick

"The world was full of knives, waiting to be picked up." -- Stephen King

"They asked for a world which never changed. I gave them a world of perpetual change. For those of their kind, it is a the same thing." --[livejournal.com profile] crowleycrow

"It is incorrect to say that Christianity is descended from [rabbinical] Judaism. More correct would be to say that rabbinical Judaism and Christianity are both descended from the matrix of ideas which consumed Jerusalem at the end of the Second Temple period. They are not parent and child; they are brothers. As were Cain and Abel." --John Dominic Crossan

"She's the one in fifty million who can really make us free, because she died on TV." --Roger Waters

"Art is art. But then, water is water. And East is East and West is West and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce, they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb do." -- George S. Kaufman, et al.

That should do for now.

We are discussing getting this bumper sticker for one or both of our cars. I believe the idea behind it completely; in fact, the idea behind it is fundamental to my understanding of America.
