mistakes and all.
[I'm cheating--few of these are my favorite writers, but these are short passages which have stayed with me. I know that a lot of these are very sloppy paraphrases; my memory has never been one for precise word order.]
"The great grey shroud of the sky rolled on unchanged as it had five thousand years before."--Herman Melville
"The ways of the past endured for so many chileads that the patterns set then remained though the reasons for them had ended ages ago." --Gene Wolfe
"What New Dorp needed was a better government. What New Viron needed was a better people." --Gene Wolfe, again
"The most merciful gift of the human mind is its inability to correlate all its contents." --H. P. Lovecraft
"I trusted that rug." --Philip K. Dick
"The world was full of knives, waiting to be picked up." -- Stephen King
"They asked for a world which never changed. I gave them a world of perpetual change. For those of their kind, it is a the same thing." --
crowleycrow
"It is incorrect to say that Christianity is descended from [rabbinical] Judaism. More correct would be to say that rabbinical Judaism and Christianity are both descended from the matrix of ideas which consumed Jerusalem at the end of the Second Temple period. They are not parent and child; they are brothers. As were Cain and Abel." --John Dominic Crossan
"She's the one in fifty million who can really make us free, because she died on TV." --Roger Waters
"Art is art. But then, water is water. And East is East and West is West and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce, they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb do." -- George S. Kaufman, et al.
That should do for now.
