Terms for the Noosphere
Oct. 8th, 2005 10:41 amA few days ago, the phrase "The Indifference Engine" popped into my head, but I discovered that I wasn't the first to coin it. I was disappointed.
Separately, I used the phrase "spaghetti design" to refer to a piece of software from one of our company vendors. (That's software that isn't really designed all; it's just sort of written and amended and patched with no rhyme nor reason, until trying to unravel its processes is like trying to trace individual strands of pasta in a big wad of spaghetti without picking it up.) I was very surprised to find that term has not been used in any discussions of the creation of the universe and the origin of species at the noodly touch of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The similarity between DNA and spaghetti code is so blindingly clear in retrospect that it can't be an accident.
So I throw that term out into the discourse.
