They're dropping like flies
Sep. 12th, 2003 11:10 amJohnny Cash and John Ritter both died today.
I would never consider myself a huge fan of either, in that I can't honestly think of the last time I chose to watch or listen to either of them, but I had tremendous respect for their respective skills.
Cash was, without a question in my mind, the most important and most interesting country musician of the last 50 years--since the death of Hank Williams, he was The Man. In fact, more than once, I have found myself thinking, "Yes, country music has merit, because it brought us Johnny Cash." While Cash's best years were behind him, he was still a powerful singer and songwriter, and it made my world better to know that he was out there touring.
John Ritter wasn't nearly as significant, but he was one of the best physical comedians since Charlie Chaplin. He could do the simplest gestures--a spit-take, a twitch, a trip-and-fall--and make them hysterically funny. It's a shame he wasn't in better works over the course of his life, but the high points are there for those who choose to see them.
Stop dying, dammit.
