I don't have much fondness for winter, but if we're going to have a winter with teeth in it, I'd much rather have one with lots of cold and relatively little snow than the other way 'round. So, all in all, it could be a lot worse. However, our situation is not improved by the fact that our ventilation-system fan motor is burning out; the furnace is producing lots and lots of heat, but it's tending to stay in the laundry room instead of coming out and playing nice. Nellorat has been huddling in bed all day, paralyzed by the cold.

Today should be the worst of it--high temperature 18F (-8C) with winds of 20 mph (30 kph). Tomorrow will be warmer, although the winds will be stronger so it won't actually feel much better if one stupidly ventures outside with any living body part exposed.

I was listening to a weather report which said something to the effect of "This cold will persist thanks to a Canadian air mass." I immediately wondered if Rutherford Bush would issue an ultimatum to Canadiac Prime Minister Jean Poutine to stop building weapons of mass cold. Then I realized that his real response would be, "This proves we must invade Iraq."
