This is, like, the best word-list ever
Feb. 11th, 2007 09:21 pmBack in late 2005, I had a successful googlewhack of "brachiating numbat". Well, there are now 50 hits for that combination on Google, including predictable things like SOWPODS (the union of the American and British official Scrabble word lists [The Official Scrabble Players' Dictionary {OSPD} and Official Scrabble Words {OSW}, respectively]). Far more interesting is this page of, as nearly as I can tell, 172,000 uncommon words.
Gleetier! Semicoma! Inspissations! Vexilla! Gorp! Together again for the first time.
As nearly as I can tell, this list is part of a lab assignment to write a program which can solve the Daily Jumble, but why they felt the need to provide 172,000 words which will never, ever be a part of a Daily Jumble is a bit of a mystery to me.
Update: On examination, I now believe that the 172K word list is the SOWPODS list, just in random order. The randomness of it adds to its appeal, I must say.
