Cub: NYC

In the last three weeks since my company's nannyware stopped blocking it, I have taken to using YouTube to feed my earworms--if I get a song stuck in my head, I zip over to YouTube and play it and either it goes away or at least I have the whole song running instead of just two or three lines.

Today I found something that I should have thought to find years ago: the video for Cub's original version of "New York City".

This might be the first time I've ever heard their version all the way through. It's easy to see why it captivated TMBG. Go, watch.

It's just amazing, as a guitarist, how bouncy and poppy that SG sounds.

HA!

They totally go *right by* my parents' apartment building.

"Hey! I can see my house from here!"

I'm interested to note that TMBG changed the chorus from "You and me" to "You and I". I suppose it's characteristic of John & John to avoid obvious rhymes.

I'm also interested to note that more than five years later, seeing the Twin Towers still gives me twinges.

Er... Everyone Freinds... New York city - cognitive dissonance!!! Alert, alert, approaching exploding head.

Actually, except for the best thing line, it's a cute song. Not cynical enough for me, I suppose.

It just begs to be parodied. Begs for it, I say.

The hookers and the pimps,
In New York City,
The pushers and the gimps,
living on the street,

The self-absorbes asses
and the flock of queers
the crazies on the subway,
I break down in tears!

How nice for you.
