I don't know why it needs to be the future tense, in that case.

"Somewhere, Mike Ford's doing this better."

(Mike Ford would know what to do with "tense" and "case" too.)

In present tense, it's a fantasy story; in future tense, it might be sf, a mini version of "Sailing to Byzantium" with almost as much plot!

How's this for a very bleak one? Is it story or not?

It's a tough call, but it seems particular enough to be a story. I might have to ask the Magic 6-Ball...
