A testament to an underrated medical miracle

Franklin and Teddy Rattsevelt, our two senior rats, passed two-and-a-half years old last Saturday, July 29. [livejournal.com profile] nellorat has put up a post about the little birthday party we put on for them (includes photos, of course) and failed to mention two striking things about them:

  • They are the oldest male rats we have ever had, and

  • They were both castrated years ago.

Happy birthday, boys.

Over at Nellorat's livejournal, there was a comment made about the limbs of your Franklin and the historical one.

The "castrated years ago" line here reminded me that both Roosevelts fathered six children.

The Sparrow wishes you a Square Deal and a New Deal.

Does neutering help male rats live longer?

I haven't encountered any arguments along those line previously. They could just be naturally long-lived. (Teddy nearly died from pneumonia at the end of 2004, so it's not like they're preternaturally healthy.)
