I don't have much I can add to the leftospheric consensus: Colbert brazened his way through one of the few genuine court jester acts we're likely to see in our lifetimes, and the Washington Press Corps are, unsurprisingly, a bunch of wankers who are deeply, deeply displeased at being called wankers. But my favorite comment on the entire event is one I haven't seen many links to. This is Chris Durang, on the Huffington Post:

It's very witty when you read the text; but actuality as Colbert says these things to the President's face, it's very uncomfortable. Watching it, It's like Hamlet forcing King Claudius to watch the play that accuses him of murder.

Yes. Yes, exactly.

I've watched the clip too, and although we are not really shown the faces of anyone in the White House press corps, I'm fairly certain that they had similar looks on their faces as Colbert ripped into them for being asleep at the wheel since the ascension of the Shrub II to the imperial throne.

By the way, did you notice the only one who really laughed when Colbert ripped into him was Justice Scalia? He was the last person I expected to see laugh over the treatment he was given.

Much as I disagree with Scalia, at least he can laugh at himself. Maybe it's because he knows he has a job no matter what happens.

And Colbert could have done a much longer routine.

The press was equally inept at covering the event. I'm particularly amused at their description of Bush's response. He had this deer-in-the-headlights look, as if saying to himself, "What? He's not kissing my ass? Help me mommy!" The conservative media said he looked "angry".

Great comparison to Hamlet. Thanks for letting me read the Durang quote.
