Blizzard of 2006

Last Sunday, the New York City area got its heaviest one-day snowfall ever--26"+. We stayed inside--fortunately none of us had to work that day; mostly we paid other people to shovel, though I did get out and shovel some myself, but only long enough to attract the attention of a passing band of professional shovelers who finished the job for me.

Navigating was a little tricky the next couple of days. It's worth noting that although this was the heaviest single snowfall on record, a few years back we received something like 36" in a short period with no melting in between. This was a light, powdery snow which was easy to shovel and which melted quickly: the freakishly warm weather returned by mid-week to remove most of what remains of the snow. Still, quite a sight while it lasted.

I took these with my fairly crappy phone camera.

Monday.

For contrast, Friday.

Many many years ago, Boskone was held a week after Boston got socked with a 24" snowstorm. The city recovered enough to clear the main thoroughfares, but it was very weird driving down the wide streets seeing the alleys with two stories of snow cached out of the way.

Here in Mpls, it snows significantly less than in NYC but tends to be colder and the snow sticks around. That's changing; even though the temp has risen to 6, there's hardly any snow on the ground.

If I had thought of it, we could have similar pictures here, since we got around a foot & a half but it's been warm all week (not now, though, it was in the teens when I walked the dawg). Nights have been kind of dicey, with significant melt during the day, which led to wet sidewalks, which led to icy sidewalks when the temp dropped.

What annoyed me even more is the insistence of our apartment management that the rental agreement puts the burden of clearing the snow on us rather than them. It took quite awhile from them to clean out the walks and parking spaces.

Wow, that's some major snow. I wouldn't wish for 26 inches of snow in one day, but I would like to have at least one snowfall this year. Alas, it looks like I won't get my wish.

(Actually now that I think about it, a 26" snowfall would be okay if the power stayed on and I had food stocked up.)

Well, our roads were passably plowed and the important parts of our property shovelled out before sunset on the day of the snowfall, so we weren't tremendously inconvenienced, other than having to delay picking up our new girl rat by a week.
