As Paris burns, a photograph from a worse time:



That's a color photograph of soldiers on the Western Front in Oise, France, 1917; it is taken from The Great War in Color, part of the Heritage of the Great War site (via).

Those are Algierians serving in the French army, back when Algerians were second-class Frenchmen. For some reason, I find this picture inexpressibly sad.
