It's official: Bush supporters are, speaking broadly, ignorant or stupid.

Lots of sources for this, but here are two good ones: Dana Milbank in The Washington Post

On al Qaeda's ties to Iraq, similarly, 75 percent of Bush supporters believed that Iraq either gave al Qaeda "substantial support" or direct involvement in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks; 30 percent of Kerry supporters held these views. A majority of Bush supporters believed the 9/11 commission backed them up on these beliefs, although the panel found no cooperation between the two, only some contacts.

and The Poor Man, "Cluebags for Bush":

Combined with last year's study of how partisan media viewership and politics influences the public's understanding of very basic facts about the world, we can reach but one conclusion: while you don't have to be a clueless FOX News moron to support Bush, it sure helps.

And a picture is worth a thousand individual facts:

The really interesting chart is on page 12 of the report which shows what percentage of Bush supporters think his policies are the opposite of what they really are. 51% think he supports Kyoto, and the numbers go up from there.

Saturday I had been out. One busy, prominent intersection I passed had a bunch of Bush supporters on it with Bush/Cheney/'04 signs on it, waving the signs around. They were mostly older white guys with one younger woman hoisting a "Moms for Bush" sign. I drove past them shaking my head.

I heard the next day that later on there had been an altercation there. One driver was wearing a rather rude T-shirt: it said "F*** Bush," with the F-word spelled out. She claimed they started attacking her car, they claimed she tried to run them over, etc. It evidently made the TV news but since I don't watch that, I heard about it from those who had.

Is it November 3 yet?

John Scalzi, who is often very worth reading, came up with nearly the same theory about Bush voters, except he added hypocritical. See this entry (http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/002872.html) and related followups.

I'm a little confused. How can 71% believe there was minor WMD activity if 92% believe there was nothing? Don't those numbers have to overlap?
