Big numbers

I was re-reading some of my old Usenet posts and discovered this datum which I posted back in May of 2002:

Tunnels cost orders of magnitude more to construct than ground-level
roads, too, even discounting the cost of the seized land. A typical
surface-level highway construction costs about $1 million per mile.
Boston's Big Dig will cost in the range of $2 billion per mile, or
2000 times as much.


Which is too bad. I like tunnels.
