A friend of mine who is not on LJ (and, for that matter, doesn't have a non-LJ blog) asked me this question:

I am trying to recall a short story about mind reading, in which the protagonist gains the power, is horrified by other people's evil thoughts, then is comforted by a Freudian psychoanalyst who tells him that he is reading the Id, which is not the whole of the mind, just the "naughty" part. I believe it was a Galaxy story from the '50s, as it featured such droll touches as a working-class cop who wanted to get a warrant to arrest "Hal Lucy Nation" in connection with the protagonist causing a disturbance on a subway train (where, reading minds, he thought he was surrounded by psychopaths and panicked accordingly).

Surprisingly, googling "Hal Lucy Nation" returns a few hits, not a one of which is this story.
