Happy birthday, Chuck and Abe
Feb. 12th, 2009 08:18 pmBut, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this entangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds. The birds singing in the bushes, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the government of the people, by the people, for the people, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with the great task remaining before us; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful shall not perish from the earth.
