Digby, 26 January 2009:

The media are going to be the death of this country. . . . Watching them deal with something complicated like our economic crisis is enough to make your head explode.

As long as the political discourse is conducted by people who know nothing about anything and who take all of their cues from the Republicans* regardless of which party is in power, has political support, or has a coherent thought, it may not be possible to get anything fixed.

(*During the three days leading up to the House vote on the Stimulus Package, Republican lawmakers outnumbered Democratic lawmakers two-to-one on the cable news commentary shows.)

I remain optimistic. It seems to me that the more extremist the Republicans get, and the more they talk about their extremism, the better. If the Republican Party wants to drive away moderates and make themselves into the party for people who agree with Rush Limbaugh (who the majority of Americans find repellant), good. Republicans, keep talking about how you want another Great Depression for your own political gain. Please.

ps: last fall I stopped reading Digby because I couldn't take the constant drumbeat of WE ARE DOOMED. I swear to god, if there wasn't any bad news on a particular day she would find stories about cops killing beloved family pets to write about (not an exaggeration, I'm afraid -- the "cops shoot dogs" story, complete with transcript of video, was the last straw for me). It's been great for my mental state.

I don't read Digby regularly, and that might be the reason why. I get that way about Glenn Greenwald, who is bombastic as well as always panicked.
