Still alive
Jan. 29th, 2009 08:18 pmMy first words were "Why am I conscious?"
I was under a general, so I had a breathing tube. As a result, both of my lips are bruised and my throat is sore. Additionally, I have vast amounts of gauze packed into my nasal passages, so I cannot draw even the slightest bit of air through them; thus, I am exclusively mouth-breathing. This means that it is painful to talk for more than a few words at a time, or at sufficient volume for
supergee to hear me. Swallowing liquid or pills is not painful, but I have to take several deep breaths before I can do it; I haven't tried solid food and I don't expect to do so today.
My legs are sore from the compression cuffs--man, were they tight! And I was in recovery for over five hours--at least one hour of it because of a misunderstanding on my part, and in large part because I was so bloody tired! (I only got five hours of sleep because I had to be at the hospital in Manhattan at 0630.) At least I got some shut-eye, and even some actual sleep, in the recovery recliner.
But I'm home. I'm not in much pain, to my great surprise and relief--right now my throat hurts much more than anything that was actually operated on. The gauze comes out tomorrow. And we'll see what happens next.
Thank you all for your kind wishes. They do mean a lot to me.
ETA: I cannot say enough nice things for supergee, who accompanied me to the hospital and was there the whole time.
