Huh! Re-reading old Usenet posts, I found this from Ulrika O'Brien in 2005 in a discussion of how to correct people politely:

It's largely a function of context, but not all of the context is manner of correction. Timing, situation, relative status, and implicit expectations count, too, though. There is, for instance, no polite way to interrupt the President of the United States during the State of the Union address to correct egregious missunderestimations of fact. Alas.


Still true. Doesn't mean people haven't tried.
