Busy busy busy
Dec. 24th, 2008 09:55 pmIdeas for the last couple of gifts for my parents and my sister occurred to me within the last couple of days, so there's no way that they'll have all of their gifts by Christmas Boxing Day New Years maybe by Epiphany? Still, I have all of my presents for
supergee and for
nellorat, and also a few nice gifts for other people including The Sparrow Who Is Not on Livejournal.
My first big errand today turned out to be a complete bust, and a depressing one at that. I knew that the K*B Toys chain was selling all of its inventory at big discounts because they're going bankrupt immediately after Christmas. I thought I would swing by and see if they had any copies of the classic Milton Glass toy/game Mousetrap, because it would be nice to have a three-dimensional Rube Goldberg device in my office to gesture at, dismissively, while discussing parts of our trading system. But the store itself was just . . . nasty. The shelves were, unsurprisingly, heavily picked-over; the staff were visibly depressed (as I would be in their situation), and the whole thing just felt squalid and unpleasant. It actually left me in a funk.
Fortunately, I followed that with a quick trip into the city--to drop off my laptop at the office so that it will be working for our trip to Michigan in early January; and to get comics, because even Christmas cannot stop the tides. I got to read comics on the train both ways, I did a little shopping in the Christmas market which is held in Grand Central every year, and I stopped by the Manhattan Chili Company in the Dining Concourse of Grand Central, which is one of my favorite restaurants EVAR but which I almost never get to because I almost never venture as far south as Grand Central when getting lunch. I need to go there more often. So, by the time I got home and ate my chili, I was feeling pretty good and very ready for the holiday.
Hail, Lord Santa, your clothes stained with the blood of disobedient children! Present us with your mercy!
