I'm about a month behind on rasff and just discovered this in a discussion of New Orleans accents, from mike weber:

(A more-or-less accurate transcription of a Nint' Wawd accent may be found in the original "Krazy Kat" strip; the author was from the Ninth Ward.)

I had of course known that George Herriman was a fair-skinned black who passed as white professionally; I hadn't known he was a Ninth Warder.
